A Little White here and There
Yay! Third article. Took me awhile to think up of a new topic to talk about. Especially since I was informed by a certain person not to do another elf article. We will call this anonymous person, oh let's say E. Richard Hoffman. Wait that’s too obvious. Ok then, we will call him Eric Richard H. Well then Mr. Eric Richard H.(or E. Richard Hoffman) I will just have to spite you and write a non-elf article.
White Weenie. First turn Mother of Runes, second turn Shadow, third turn Imperial Armor. That’s what old WW loved to do best. It could out do Sligh and Suicide with it’s pro colored, armored Shadows, and beat Stompy the same way.[Editor's Note: Actually, Stompy always had more trouble with First Strike.] But near the end of old Extended, it was lacking winning power. With Donate being able to gain 20 life when WW was about to swing for the win, and Gro just being plain better, WW just didn’t seem to be able to do well. But maybe things will change. Just maybe in this New-Fangled extended, WW will be able to put a fighting chance.
Imperial Armor is gone. Not good. Swords to Plowshares is gone. Crap. Two of the most efficient cards WW had are now out of Extended. Which means change is in order.
New-Fangled Leetweenie 2003(I like long annoying names):
4 Meddling Mage
4 Mother of Runes
4 Topple
4 Ramosian Sergeant
4 Parallax Wave
4 Whipcorder
4 Brainstorm
3 Seal of Cleansing
3 Divine Sacrament
4 True Believer
2 Island
12 Plains
4 Flooded Strand
4 Adakar Wastes
Man, does this deck look nothing like the old WW. The only thing similar between the two are the Mothers and the Seals. But WW it be still! Instead of a quick shadow and Longbow beatdown, you take a more controlish way with the Whipcorder and Ramosian Sergeant rebel-chain. You get out Meddling Mage to stop their big important spells, and True Believer makes Discard and Edicts stay away from you. But it also has to replace one of the best removal cards in the game(STP) for the less efficient Topple and Parallax Wave. Now Topple may be less efficient, but since your biggest creature you are likely to get is a 2/2 or a 3/3, it is a decent replacement.
The deck runs pretty smoothly, But how does it fair against the other decent-good decks in the format.
Sligh. Good old Sligh. WW used to be able to take advantage of Sligh with Imperial Armor. Well WW’s main edge is gone. Now it has Divine Sacrament as its hope. The Sacrament makes most of your guys 3/3’s. A 3/3 is pretty good against Sligh. But the Sacrament isn’t really enough. Ok its not even close to enough. Here enters Sideboard. Absolute Law. All your creatures get Pro-Red. Now that’s an edge. Since they can’t kill your creatures with out Cursed Scroll(which the Seals can deal with) they can’t attack you. You can also throw in some COP reds in sideboard if you can find some room. Overall, I think Sligh is stronger in this match up, but after 1st game, WW does stand a bigger chance
Oath. Gary Oath. Nishoba Oath. Turboland. All I can say is, TOO MANY OATH DECKS. Oath is evil. Which ever version. But with Whipcorders and Topples, the match up isn’t that bad. Well, as long as they aren’t playing Pernicious Deed, But hopefully you can Mage this away, or draw your sideboarded in Interdicts.
Turboland, though, is different. Since tapping its creatures won’t hurt it from going-off, I say Wave and Topple are WW’s only option besides Seal. And those are easily countered. Plus if the version is running Crater Hellion, then you are as good as toast. Though I like WW’s odds vs. most Oath, Turboland definitely has the odds on its side. Good thing its a complex deck that sees little play. Except for that occasional one played by a Mr. Adam. [Editor's Note: Everyone knows that I'm the only one in the world who plays this deck, duh.]
Suicide Black. This is the deck I would call WW’s nemesis. Both are weenie decks that try to out speed the opponent. But I like WW’s odds in this match up. Mother of Runes hurts Suicide. A lot. Whipcorder makes life for Suicide annoying, and A nice timed Mage can destroy their chance of Smothering the creature they need to kill. The biggest fear against this deck would be it’s Shadows. Since most WW decks no longer run Shadows, Suicide’s Shadows are free to beat you down. But that’s what Mr. Wave is for. And maybe a Light of Day in the sideboard if you really fear Suicide and other Black decks.
Reanimater. The deck that died after Pro-tour Houston. With the exception of the occasional rouge Reanimater, I don’t see WW having to go up against this deck. And if WW does have to play the occasional Reanimater, Topple, Wave, and Whipcorder make WW have the advantage. Mage, Seal, and Interdict(which is usually in the sideboard) also try to keep the random Contagion and Deed from ruining your day. WW has the advantage me thinks.
Rock. So many versions. All depends on which version you play. In most you will want to draw Meddling Mage for Deed. Deed and living Death are really the two cards WW fears in this match-up. Either stop those two cards from coming, or hold back. This match-up I think could go either way evenly. Depends on the draws from both decks. I could be wrong, but you never know.
Psycotog. I think this may actually be WW’s best match-up. Tog is usually weak against decks like Suicide and WW. They can’t deal with the rush. So not much to say here. Stop Tog with Mage and Wave. Try not to die.
U/G madness. The deck that is considered the best deck in the format by many. against this deck I would probably use the same basic strategy of Rebel-chaining. Try to stop their creatures, and beat them down as quickly as possible. Wave is great against Roar of the Wurm, as is Topple. But U/G madness always finds a way to win in the end. Still not that horrible of a match-up since it has no Deeds or massive creature destruction spells. I like the odds against this deck better than against Turbo-Oath and even the Rock.
Well those are all of the deck off the top of my head that have made some sort of impact on Extended. Overall WW probably isn’t that great of a choice, but its certainly not the worst. Its a really fun deck to play, but in the end its probably only tier 2.
