Bega Tech
Rudy, rootabega, Rudybega, The Bega, old nickname-new deckname, whateva. My goal in this deck was to try to get as much
card advantage and tempo out of black/green as possible and still be a little aggressive and controlling, and of course be able to get out of most situations. I've been playtesting various versions of this deck over the past few weeks, but it just
didn't work. I tried Explorations instead of Llanowar Elves to see if I can abuse it with Yavimaya Elder and Krosan Tusker, but while it was good mid-game, relying on drawing Exploration first turn just
wasn't good enough. A few nights before the tournament I set a new goal for myself: to
build a deck that doesn't rely on one card to be good. Make the deck all around with back up for each card. I've never fiddled this much with a deck before but the new goal I set for myself could not be left alone.
Finally, after switching cards back and forth for hours and playtesting about 20 games, I came up with this lil' deck:
Creature Weetures:
4xBirds of Paradise
3xFaceless Butcher
3xSpiked Feeder
3xRavenous Baloth
3xKrosan Tusker
Spelly Wellies:
4xLiving Wish
4xDiabolic Edict
4xPhyrexian Arena
3xOversold Cemetery
3xDuress
3xPowder Keg
1xCabal Therapy
Landy Wandies:
7xForests
5xSwamps
4xTreetop Village
3xLlanowar Wastes
3xTainted Wood
22 total land-----60 total cards
Sideboardy wobbordy.... ah whatever:
4xNaturalize
1xBone Shredder
1xPhantom Centaur
1xBlastoderm
1xDruid Lyrist
1xUktabi Orangutan
1xCrypt Rats
1xPlague Spitter
1xGenesis
1xSpike Feeder
1xThrashing Wumpus
1xWithered Wretch
Note: I couldn't borrow Yavimaya Elders from anyone, so I had to put in krosen
Tuskers.
Being the lazy mexican I am, I didn't bother writing down anything for the tournament report. But being the smart Mexican I am I have a decent memory.
So, commences le conquering.
Round:new abington player- Zombies
The tournament started out weird because I got a bye, but like 20 minutes later three guys come down
wanting to join. So, we pair two of them up and I play the third guy. It was a brutal beating.
First game: He was stuck at 2 land I played birds and treetops and feeders and killed him before he got to play anything.
Second game: He Firebolted me and if I remember correctly, Lava Axed me. I laid
creatures. He died,
1-0
Round 2:Chris Colwell-Burning Bridge
First game: "It was Ugly" said Chris. I had an answer for everything in his deck.
All he could do was Lava Dart and Firebolt me.
Second game: I felt really confident about this match-up after sideboard because of the 4 naturalizes. But
Chris kept drawing good cards and my Naturalizes didn't come till late game. Ensnaring
Bridge kept me at bay for a few turns and after I Edicted myself and saced the orangutan
I Wished for. He Rats Feasted my graveyard. Damn rats. The game was prolonged even more,
but he was never given the opportunity to do any damage to me. Working the Arenas I
finally drew the Naturalize for his Bridge and swung for enough damage with 4 Treetop
Villages. Rarrrrrrrrgh!
2-0
Round 3:Adam Whitlach-Fiends
First game: medling mages, sergeants and lynx's Oh my!. He had this game won. The only thing I had going for me was an arena. Feeders and land is what I basically drew and it helped me survive for a little while. Then he lays a Negator and basically I knew I was on my last turn. I draw a swamp and living wish and that was game for him. Crypt rats explode for 3 leaving him with nothing but a land left
because of Negator. that was a heart pounder.
Second Game: early Powder Keg really helped and I kept coming out with the creatures. He never drew Parallax
Wave all day. [Editor's Note: except against Destan. I drew all four with only
three lands out] I never got anything to give me card advantage but I didn't need it; he kept drawing his little 2/2's and a morphed creature hits the board. I assume its a
Whipcorder. Turns out I was wrong. A nice Exalted Angel eats one of my Baloths alive. I simply go to the card built to handle shit like this and
Living Wish for a Bone Shredder. That being his only threat my creatures overran him.
3-0
Round 4:Chris Talbert-U/G Madness
First game: I'll start this off with saying what everyone was saying, "What the
hell!?" No one expected Chris to do this well and he was drawing like a Finkel on crack. I start out with a decent hand.
Birds and Powder Keg hit the board and I'm holding a Butcher waiting for him to cast his
Roar that he Careful Studied into his graveyard 3rd turn. He was already attacking me with an
Aquamoeba and 2 Rootwallas. Being the idiot that I am, I blow the keg and then realized my
Birds would die also being my 2nd black mana source for my Butcher. Roar of the
Wurm plus my mistake gives me my only game loss for the day.
Second game: The hand I drew was slow and shitty but I did have a pair of Kegs, I had 5 turns sitting on one land and the
Kegs saving me from his aggressive creatures. I finally drew a 3rd land which let me play
Feeders to stall. I finally started drawing all the land I didn't get and keep laying
Feeders and Baloths. He had a Bouncer against Feeder but I would just remove a counter and gain 2 life. Talbert started running out of creatures
because I Edicted him twice and laid a Faceless Butcher. He didn't realize he had a
Roar of the Wurm in his graveyard, and I sure as hell wasn't gonna tell him. He just kept drawing land and saying go and I just kept swinging.
Third game: I drew a good hand and it was his creatures vs. mine. He kept threatening me with his
Bouncers, but I kept Faceless Butchering him. He tried to Roar of the Wurm, but
Keg proves its worth yet again. Wonder became a problem for me through Mongrols flying over for damage, but
Feeders and and Cemeteries kept me safe. It was a hard drawn out game, but I just simply had more
than him.
4-0
Round 5:Destan Hoots-Aggrock (pretty much rock)
First game: Longest game ever. it seemed I had to use every single card in my deck to out
muscle his constant flood of creatures. He tried to Living Wish for Wretch to stop my graveyard, but he plays it without any mana left and
Faceless Butcher gobbles him up. He tries to Buried Alive Monger Genesis and Elder but I
Living Wish for Wretch and take out the Genesis. "You bitch!" says Destan.
"Yep pretty much" says I. After like 30 minutes of playing back and forth I had to resort to some trample
damage with my Treetop Village. Eric Hoffman graciously informs me while giving an example of a ruling of
Treetop Village that I can move counters to treetop village from feeder and it will stay there
because "it doesn't care". the ruling I asked about was how Treetop Village was affected by tangle. Thanks Eric. ahh probly
wouldn't have mattered. I piss Destan off by Faceless Butchering every threat he had and win the game.
Second game: This game was much faster but still drawn out because my lack of
trampling. Again I had to use Feeders and Treetop Villages to trample over some damage.
Basically like last game but I knew how to kill him. he laid threats and Faceless
Butcher owns them. Win.
5-0
Probably one of my best dominating performances I've had. Experimenting with Black/Green has been really fun and trying out different engines with colors other than blue is even
more fun. I loved seeing the "underdogs" of Casey's like Chris Talbert and Destan doing so well and having 16 people down there was a really good showing. I really like seeing all those people trying and I hope they learn
a lot from theses tournaments because I sure as hell do. I learned how to utilize
Feeder and Village and how to strategically play Faceless Butcher. I learned that
relying on one card engine is not good and that back up for everything you do is essential. And most of all I gained more experience and
enlightenment in the game of magic. I hope everyone had a good time and will hope to see everyone again at the next tournament. And of course I'll
quit you guys with some Props and Slops. Adios.
Props:
Chris Talbert's performance and Top decking skills
Eric Hoffman's great example for treetop village "not caring"
Adam for keeping the site up and going
Chris Shumard's new Old Peiking Waitress job
Abington players showing new faces at Casey's
Borrowing 3 Baloths from Chris, which he'll never get back
Slops:
Blowing Keg for one and killing birds costing me the game
Eric adding 10 minutes to our time because we were talking for about 2 minutes
Paul Wang declaring that he might quit Magic...... he must learn
Not having Yavimaya Elder
Mech Warrior fags. period.
