Green Power

Another tournament has come and gone. Crushed spirits and re-boosting of egos have come and passed yet again. Except this time it is I that has the re-boosted ego and not the crushed spirit. Taking a 3rd in this tournament with a deck called Green Power, I feel refreshed in my game playing abilities. This should also put me around 5th on the Player of The Year Race.

Here is my decklist for Green Power:

4 Birds of Paradise
4 Llanowar Elves
4 Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary
3 Ravenous Baloth
3 Masticore
3 Deranged Hermit
3 Skyshroud Poacher

4 Call of The Herd
4 Living Wishes
3 Naturalize
2 Slate of Ancestry
Lands:
3 Rishadan Port
4 Windswept Heath
3 Gaea’s Cradle
13 Forest

1 Kavu Chameleon
1 Masticore
1 Naturalize
1 Dustbowl

1 Nantuko Vigilante
1 Elvish Lyrist

All of Friday I thought I was going to be playing B/G Reanimator. Reanimator previously got me 4th place, and my only 2 Playa Points yo. Reanimator also can kick ass in our local Meta-game. Then I saw this deck online. I know how to play this type of deck very well, and I liked how it looked. I was then in a pickle. Here I have two deck choices. I can either play Reanimator, that was done me well this year, or accelerated Green, which hasn’t done me all that well this year.

So I used a complex system of elimination to decide which deck to play. I basically flipped a coin. Green lost the flip, but knowing how my luck has been lately, I chose the deck that lost the flip. Lady Luck can’t fool me.

I then built the deck and Sideboard and played a few games with Chaos Chris and Rudy. I seemed to be able to beat Chris more then not, but Rudy’s newly tweaked cemetery deck was giving me problems. So I knew that I would have to think and play carefully against Rudy if I saw him the next day.

Out of all the decks that I expected, The only deck that I didn’t have much against was Reanimator. First Round:

Robert L. with REANIMATOR!!

Joy. The one deck that I didn’t want to see. I won the roll and chose to play first. It didn’t matter how fast I busted out the gates, he got a second turn Multani. He also had enough Reanimation left to re-reanimate the Multani again, and 1 of my Baloths and 1 of my Hermits. I am loose after that.

Second game I side in Tangle Wires. With those and Ports, I hope to stall long enough to be able to win. I chose to play first, mulliganed down to six, and lost. No ports or Wires. I lost quickly to a second turn Visara and felt gay(er).

Second Round: Andrew playing an accelerated W/G deck.

I won the role and decided that I was pro going first. I saw some of his deck earlier that day and knew one of his kills was Phantom Nishoba. I ended up getting a first turn BoP and followed second turn with Cradle and Living Wish. But the living Wish target was hard to pick. I had no creatures that costed 3 or less or lands in hand. And I didn’t feel like relying on drawing a land, so I chose the Vigilante from my sideboard. I played it morphed next turn to make my Cradle produce more mana. I drew a land, played a Poacher and seemed to just win from there. With Poacher I was able to get Hermits, which pumped Cradle up more. I played Masticore to kill what ever he played, and Slate to refill my hand. After having to sit for 4 turns thanks to Moments Peaces, I won.

Second Game I had a really slow hand. I basically stalled for a few turns with a Port, hoping to draw some mana acceleration. He plays a Charging Troll 5th turn, another sixth turn, and a Phantom Centaur 7th turn. I still didn’t have the mana I was hoping for. I played a Poacher that saved my life by getting chump blocking Squirrels. After awhile of the Troll/Centaur beat down, I finally drew Slate of Ancestry. With that I drew a Cradle and a Masticore. I had enough mana to pull back from the onslaught of my opponents creatures, and won the game at 3 life.

Third round: Masta Dibater playing burn.

Since I don’t know his real name, I guess I will have to use his “nick-name”. I bust out the gates with a first turn Bop, second turn Rofellos. He decides to Firebolt and Volcanic Hammer me instead of my happy little 2/1 elf. With that elf I played Baloth, Masticore, Hermit, and other biggies that ended up killing him. But he did manage to burn me down to 3 life.

Second Game I played Baloths and won.

I was now 2-1. I was feeling pretty good.

Fourth round: Chris Shumard playing G/R/U.

I had just seen Chris play earlier, so I knew what most of his deck looked like, and he told me that he didn’t know what was in my deck at all. I started out with a second turn Elephant, and continued with more threats he couldn’t deal with. I won

Next game I borded in Wires. The game went a lot like the first one. Fast elephant, Masticore beatdown, and he didn’t draw a Flame Tongue. I won making me 3-1

Last round: Rudy playing Cemetery.

This is the round that mattered. If I won, I would get third. If I lost, I wouldn’t place. We both knew each others decks pretty well I think, so we knew what to expect. Both games were pretty much the same thing. I played threat, he couldn’t deal with threat, I win. Second game he did have a Crypt Rats, but I had a caller to replace my army. He didn’t get Deed, and I won.

This made me 4-1, and gave me 3rd place with Adam and Eric drawing to take the top 2 places. Bastards. I donated my prize money to Adam’s invitational and left Casey's happy with my day.
