Magic
Etiquette
etiquette
noun
[U]
the set of rules or customs which control accepted
behaviour in particular social groups or social situations
After attending the last PTQ in St. Charles,
I’ve come to one conclusion. The average Tournament Qualifying/Pro player is,
how should I phrase this, ……………an asshole. Never have I seen this type
of behavior at any of the tournaments at Casey’s, and I highly doubt I ever
will. Does your attitude in the game show who you are in real life; outside of
the game? For a lot of the people I ran into I really hope this isn’t true.
For the most part, I think of myself as someone who really loves
(No I’m not Gay) the game, but also the atmosphere during gameplay, the
occasional joke, talking about the newest expansion, and maybe a little trade
discussion. At Casey’s I’ve had all of these conversations at one time or
another, and all during shuffling, or even during gameplay. I know what a few of
you are thinking, when you start to play at the higher tables, the stakes
increase, and you need to focus more. I understand this, but being focused,
doesn’t keep you from being courteous.
For example, during one of my later rounds,
Can’t member which one, of the tournament, my opponent chose not to talk to
me. I mean, he choose silence. I tried to use some icebreakers, but nothing.
After the game, I told him that I wasn't trying to be rude, just merely trying
to lighten up the game more since the Top 8 wasn't possible for either of us. He
didn't care. He even went as far as not even shaking hands with me after the
match, merely walking away while my hand was extended. I did win that match, but
was there any reason for not shaking my hand? Not once have I ever extended my
hand after a match here in town, have I not received a hand shake, no matter
what the outcome. I just question how much fun he was having, and if it was
none, why even bother playing. One thing I think really needs to be said is,
whatever your ranking in Magic, be respectful. Respect in the game means respect
outside of the game. This is just one example of the day I had in St. Charles,
but there was a few more bad experiences.
I’ve been playing Magic since Feb 1994, when
Revised came out. I can still remember the first night we all got together to
play for the first time. Can you guys remember your first night/day? I can tell
you this, I’m still enjoying Magic as much now as I was then. How many people
can honestly say that? I know, I know, your thinking, This guy needs help, but
seriously, isn’t that what magic is supposed to be- Fun?
One Fundamental truth about the cardboard crack
game- If your not having fun, unless your winning, maybe it’s time to move on.
And if this is the case, do you have any Blistering Firecats, you won’t be
needing anymore?
